"The Everyday Figure Online Workshop". An online course by Phil Starke
Learn to be able to achieve this incredible goal… even if you've never tried to paint figures!
These days, smart phones give us instant access to a good camera. We can take good pictures of everyday people doing ordinary things, any time, any place. Whether it's at the park or a sporting event or even in your backyard with friends and family, our phones can provide good material for painting.
The problem is, how do you turn those images into paintings? The camera doesn't always give us the best composition or color, and painting the figure can be very difficult.
Whether it's painting children or adults, you have to deal with proportions, showing action or mood, as well as how to simplify and eliminate detail. It's hard to know where to begin with the figure. Should I jump right into the painting, or should I do a detailed drawing first? How do I know what to eliminate in the photo? What's important and what's not? What colors best express my subject?
It's easy to ruin your painting with too much detail, and frustrating trying to stay loose with good brushwork.
I'm Happy To Bring To You My Online Workshop
In my online course, THE EVERYDAY FIGURE, I demonstrate how to turn these pictures we take everyday into paintings. The course has 9 full length demonstrations where I show how to create good compositions and think through the process of simplifying and constructing the painting. I show how to "see" your subject in terms of simple shapes and values that make it easier to draw and place the figure in its environment. You'll also learn how to think about color to better suggest the light and form, how to suggest movement, and create subtle color and value changes that refine the painting.
The path to mastery in any field is through intentional repetition. Which is why I make this workshop available to members whenever they're ready to get to work, 24/7. You get lifetime access.
Phil Starke has a long history of delivering exceptional online training to students all over the world. He has been bringing art instruction to the internet since 2009 through his "Online Mentoring", "Bootcamp Workshop Online Course", "Plein Air Online Course", "Light & Shadow Online Workshop" and "How To Successfully Mix Greens And Paint A Summer Landscape".
This course will help give you confidence and you'll feel more energized as you build your skills and knowledge.
You'll also gain clarity of direction. No more confusion from wandering the internet or watching a multitude of YouTube videos.
It's unique to have a figure workshop focus on those everyday figures you find in your photographs. Figure workshops normally focus on the "formal posed portrait, or full figure". With "The Everyday Figure" workshop, learn to paint those informal, memorable photos you want to bring to the canvas!
Here's what people are saying about studying with Phil Starke
Introduction Module
The Introductory Module gives you a jump start so you can dive right into the workshop. A video and supply list are included within this Module.
Module 1: Adults
This video demo demonstrates the importance of establishing the large shapes or masses of dark and light, this sets up the composition as well as establishing light direction. It's the important first step before any detail or subtle value and color changes take place.
In this video demonstration I show how to paint figures in a busy scene, how to decide what's important and what can be eliminated. The importance of simplifying the shapes and values so that color is an easier process to understand.
In this video the figures are smaller and the landscape (or cityscape in this case) is bigger, so it helps to be able to suggest what's going on with the figure, using bigger brushstrokes to suggest form and cut down on detail.
This video focuses on how to show depth by using subtle value and color changes as well as a variety of hard and soft edges in the large masses of color.
Module 2: Children
The focus of this video is suggesting light, how it affects the form and color of the subject, as well as using negative shapes to simplify and achieve accurate proportions.
In this video I demonstrate how to capture the action of children playing soccer. I show how to create movement in the figures and how to keep them from looking stiff.
In this video the figures are smaller and the landscape (or cityscape in this case) is bigger, so it helps to be able to suggest what's going on with the figure, using bigger brushstrokes to suggest form and cut down on detail.
The 4 Bonuses
There are 4 bonuses for this workshop. Each Bonus is designed to take you a little deeper into skill development. See below for full descriptions.
Four Great Bonuses To Take You Further!
Reclining figures can be a little tricky. In figures laying on the ground or on a couch, there is a gesture to them, a movement of line that keeps the figures from looking stiff. In this video I show how to capture the attitude of reclining figures, using longer brushstrokes to show more fluidity.
In this video I demonstrate how to understand and use the planes of the head to simplify and show form and solidity. Without an understanding of the planes of the head, the heads you paint will look mushy and amateurish.
FREE Professional Development Webinars for Members of "The Everyday Figure" Workshop only. I'll be doing webinars to continue to work with members on this skill development. This Bonus alone keeps the education in this Workshop growing.
Photographs are a great tool to use in painting. But there are a lot of problems when working from photos, and it helps to be aware of what they are. In this art guide I go over each of these problems and explain solutions to them.

My personal note
I know the mere mention of painting figures can be intimidating. But I'm not talking about the polished work of portrait painting. I want you to be able to take those photos you love of your family or friends, or figures from the beach, the market, or the park, and be able to put those figures into a painting.
I'm very happy with this online workshop, and feel confident that I will be able to bring clarity and build your skill in bringing some of your favorite photos to life in your paintings.
I look forward to working with you to help you build this skill. I've painted several of my grandchildren at play, reading, and in the lap of their parents. I've also painted interesting people from parks and markets. It's very enjoyable to be able to take some of my favorite photos and create paintings from them.
Join me in this workshop and learn how to turn your favorite, memorable photos into works of art!
