"How To Successfully Mix Greens And Paint A Summer Landscape" Online Course
"This course will help give you confidence and you'll feel more energized as you build your skills and knowledge. Green landscapes will no longer be such a frustration.
You'll also gain clarity of direction. No more confusion from wandering the internet or watching a multitude of YouTube videos."
-- Phil Starke
Module 1 - Video 1 - Intro
"Understanding A Green Landscape" 43 min.
In this video I explain the issues or problems we all have with “green” landscapes. I talk about how to use the photograph correctly and not become too dependent on it and
how to use a variety of color for the greens in the landscape so it doesn’t become monochromatic or garish.
Module 1 - Video 2
"How To Successfully Mix Greens And Paint A Summer Landscape"
2 hrs. 24 min.
In this full painting demonstration you will see the thought process of mixing color for a green landscape from start to finish. How to simplify what you see so that values and colors become easier to understand and apply.
Module 2 - Video 1 - Intro
"Understanding The Anatomy Of A Tree" 19 min.
In this video I show how to “see” trees as an artist not as a camera. We need to be able to reduce the tree to its simple shape and mass before attempting to apply the values and color. I also show examples of how other artists have simplified values and shapes as well as how they thought about the colors they used.
Module 2 - Video 2
"Understanding & Painting the Anatomy Of A Tree"
53 min.
In this full painting demonstration I show how to think through the process of painting a tree, its structure, simplification and finish. I go through each step with the goal of simplifying and suggesting the type of light and atmosphere.
Download and keep these handy guides with you when you're painting in the studio or out in the field. They're full of useful information that will help you with those "green" landscapes.
I've put together this brochure on Frustrating Summer Greens because it is one of the big challenges artists face when painting outside in spring and summer. It seems like everything is the color green. Gaining a better skill level in mixing greens will help artists have more successful paintings when facing this challenge.
Trees are very busy looking with too many branches going in all directions. so to paint them you have to simplify the shape. It helps to think in terms of designing a shape that reduces the detail and makes it easier for the viewer to look at.
I've been a professional artist for almost 40 years. As an artist, I understand the struggles artists have as they develop their skills. As a workshop and online instructor, I continue to see these common struggles among art students.
I struggled with these skills early on when I began to paint, but when I understood why they were important and how to place them properly in my paintings I saw just how important they were and what a difference they made in my paintings. From then on I was able to focus on the distinct look I wanted in my paintings, no longer wondering why my paintings weren't working out. Everything began to flow naturally. And so I began my career as a professional artist.
I've been teaching all over this country for over 30 years and then began teaching online since 2009. In that time I've worked with hundreds of artists and there's generally a common struggle had by nearly all students.
Phil Starke's painting, "The Basketweaver", was selected for the November 2001 cover of Southwest Art Magazine. This issue also had a feature article on Phil's work.

"Really enjoyed the "mixing greens and tree anatomy" learning modules and PDF info. I'm a Marland resident so it was helpful to watch you mix your greens and adjust them with the use of complimentary colors. I also appreciated your comments about simplifying the tree shapes into two values in the light and two values within the shadow areas. I took note of the small subtle jumps between warmer, cooler and more neutral colors that are used to modify areas in the painting. Great examples by historical painters. I’ve always been a huge Puthuff fan! Your paintings are so well designed and beautiful. Happy customer!"
